Young men of Douglas Shire responded well to the call to serve their country during World War I, 1914-1918. We have identified around 220 men who were born or enlisted in the Shire or who enlisted elsewhere but had family addresses back in the Shire.

Here we provide summaries of their service records and short stories telling what we know of them from records or newspaper articles or contact with relatives.    Where no photograph of the serviceperson is provided, we have been unable to obtain this information. If you can provide further details, please feel welcome to contact us.

Search for Douglas Diggers by selecting from the four campaigns (New Guinea, Gallipoli, Middle East and Western Front), and then search by name.

Online records through the Australian War Memorial and the National Library of Australia, as well as the information passed on by families of Diggers, have greatly assisted our research.   If you can add more information or photos about Douglas soldiers from the First World War, either the ones we know about or any who have been missed from the list, please contact info@douglashistory.org.au

The Discovering Anzacs website which provided further information on each of the soldiers was decommissioned in February 2023.

“National Archives’ Discovering Anzacs website has been decommissioned after almost 10 years of service.

The Discovering Anzacs platform is no longer supported, restricting our ability to ensure security and up-to-date user functionality.

The website has been taken down, with a view to developing another offering that meets the digital standards and provides the public with the best digital experience possible.

We are committed to making the transition as seamless as possible, and will be providing further information and support to help our users.

Long term, National Archives is exploring other ways to provide a more contemporary digital experience, with the goal of connecting more Australians with National Archives’ war service records and the broader collection. This work will take some time before being publicly available.

You can access First World War and Boer War records through our defence and war service records page.

An archived version of the website is available on Trove.”
